WARDOGS does support HOTAS. A stick, throttle and pedals all work once they are bound correctly, and the game exposes a dedicated HOTAS toggle rather than expecting you to map a flight stick onto keyboard bindings.

The one thing to know before you touch anything else: enabling that toggle without a flight stick actually connected disables keyboard and mouse flight input entirely. If your helicopter has stopped responding after you went looking for stick support, this is why.

Turn the HOTAS toggle on only when the hardware is plugged in

This is the single most important step and it is the one that generates the most "the game is broken" reports. The HOTAS option is a mode switch, not an additive setting: with it enabled, the game stops listening to mouse and keyboard for flight input.

That behaviour is correct for a pilot who is actually flying on a stick. It is disastrous for someone who enabled the option to see what it did, left it on, and went back to mouse and keyboard.

So the order is: connect the hardware first, confirm the operating system sees it, then enable HOTAS in the game. If you unplug the stick later, turn the toggle back off.

If flight input has gone completely dead, check the HOTAS toggle before troubleshooting anything else. This is the most common cause by a wide margin.

What the game gives you to bind

Helicopter flight in WARDOGS comes down to two concepts, and mapping them to a HOTAS is much easier once you think in those terms rather than in individual keys.

Collective is total lift — the input that makes you climb or descend. On keyboard it sits on W and S, and on a HOTAS it belongs on your throttle axis, which is the control your hand already treats as "more or less".

Cyclic tilts the rotor disc to move you horizontally: pitch forward and back, roll left and right. That is the stick itself. Yaw, which rotates the nose without moving you, sits on A and D by default and belongs on pedals or a stick twist axis if you have one.

Flight inputWhere it belongs on a HOTAS
Collective (climb / descend)Throttle axis
Cyclic pitch (forward / back)Stick forward and back
Cyclic roll (left / right)Stick left and right
Yaw (nose rotation)Pedals, or stick twist
Free lookLeft Alt by default — see below

Free look on a stick

Free look is bound to left Alt by default, and a tap or double-tap returns control to the aircraft. This matters more on a HOTAS than on mouse and keyboard, because looking around is how you check a landing zone without losing the aircraft.

If you are flying with a hat switch, that is the natural home for it. The official documentation covers the default keyboard binding rather than prescribing a stick layout, so the specific mapping is yours to choose.

Flight assists still apply

Moving to a HOTAS does not bypass the assist system, and the same advice holds: start with the Flight Assists master toggle on, along with Stability Assist and Auto-Hover Assist, until lifting off and setting down is boring.

Experienced pilots turn the master toggle off for manoeuvring freedom and accept a much less forgiving airframe. Envelope Limits and Turn Coordination come off at the same stage.

One diagnostic is worth memorising: if the aircraft actively fights your inputs and resists aggressive manoeuvres, Auto-Hover Assist is the first thing to disable. On a stick this reads as unmistakable resistance rather than the vaguer sluggishness you feel on mouse.

Known keybind bugs to check against patch notes

The official keybind FAQ documented several problems during the beta period. If you hit one of these while setting up a stick, check the current patch notes before assuming you have misconfigured your hardware.

Two of them will specifically waste your time during a HOTAS setup: rebinding one key could unexpectedly affect other bindings, and inverting the Y axis incorrectly inverted roll as well. Both look exactly like a device configuration problem.

  • Spacebar weapon functionA hidden weapon function bound to spacebar that could not be removed.
  • Rebinding side effectsChanging one binding could unexpectedly alter others.
  • Mouse input dropoutMouse pitch and roll input could stop working entirely.
  • Y-axis inversionInverting the Y axis also inverted roll.

Which helicopter to set up on

Learn a new control scheme on the MH-6. It is the light transport most players fly first, it is the aircraft the introductory material uses, and at $6,250 it is the one you can afford to write off while your bindings are still wrong.

The Havoc at $18,000 is not a training aircraft and is a genuinely expensive way to discover that your throttle axis is inverted.

Aircraft access is gated by Pilot level specifically, so time spent flying is what unlocks more flying. A HOTAS does not change your progression, only your ceiling once you get there.

What is not documented

This page will not invent detail that BULKHEAD has not published. There is no official compatibility list naming supported stick or throttle models, no published guidance on curves, deadzones or per-axis sensitivity, and no official recommended binding layout for a HOTAS.

What is confirmed is that the support exists and works with a stick, throttle and pedals bound correctly. Treat any specific device list you find elsewhere as a community report rather than a specification.

HOTAS questions answered

Short answers to the most common flight stick problems.

  • Does WARDOGS support HOTAS?Yes. A stick, throttle and pedals all work once bound correctly.
  • Does WARDOGS support a flight stick?Yes, through the same HOTAS support. Enable the toggle only with the hardware connected.
  • Why did my keyboard and mouse stop working? The HOTAS toggle is enabled without a flight stick connected. Turn it off.
  • Where does the collective go on a HOTAS?The throttle axis. Collective is total lift, which is why it sits on W and S on keyboard.
  • How do I bind free look?It defaults to left Alt. A hat switch is the natural home for it on a stick.
  • Is there an official list of supported devices? No. BULKHEAD has not published a compatibility list.
  • Why did inverting Y also invert my roll?A documented beta bug, not a device fault. Check current patch notes.
  • Should I fly with assists off on a stick? Not while learning the bindings. Start with the master toggle on.
