You create a squad from inside a match, not from the main menu. Press Esc and Create Squad sits at the top of the menu that opens. You can equally join any squad that is currently open instead of starting your own.

The order matters more than the button does. A squad only exists inside one server and one team, so whoever creates it should be in the match first — everyone else then joins them rather than queuing separately and trying to meet up afterwards.

Creating a squad from inside a match

Press Esc once you have loaded into a match. The Create Squad option is at the top of that menu, and taking it makes you the squad that other players can then drop into.

You do not have to create one. The same menu lists the squads currently open in your match, and joining an existing squad is a single action. If you are playing alone and want squad voice, this is the faster route.

There is also a social and squad panel on the main menu, before anyone has loaded in, which can send Steam invites or in-game invites. It works, but it is the route where players reported the most inconsistency during the beta.

Why the squad has to be created first

Three separate things have to line up before a group is actually playing together: the same server, the same team, and the same squad. A squad is the innermost of the three and cannot bridge the other two.

That is why the reliable pattern is one person entering first, picking the server and team, and creating the squad there. Everyone else then joins that player through their Steam friends list, which resolves all three in one action.

If the whole group queues separately, you are fighting server capacity and team balance simultaneously, with no mechanism to correct either once you are in.

When the squad you want is locked

Squads can be locked, and a locked squad cannot be joined from the outside no matter how many times you try. From your side a locked squad and a full team look identical, which is why groups get stranded here.

The fix has to come from inside. Someone already in the squad opens the Unassigned Players list, finds you in it, and invites you across. The squad does not need to be unlocked for this to work.

Ask for it explicitly over voice or chat rather than retrying the join, because the person inside has no indication that you are attempting to get in.

What being in the same squad actually gets you

The game runs two separate voice channels: local proximity chat that anyone standing nearby can hear, and squad chat that only your squad hears. Being on the same team in different squads leaves you with no private channel.

That is a tactical problem rather than an inconvenience. Anything said over proximity chat can be heard by enemies close enough to you, so planning a push without squad voice is announcing it to whoever is listening.

Staying near your squad has a mechanical payoff too. Going down beside a teammate means you can be revived, while going down alone usually costs a full respawn and the travel time back. Reviving pays the player performing it, so a squad that holds together earns more than the same players scattered.

What is the max squad size in WARDOGS?

There is no official number. Neither the Steam store page nor any developer documentation states a maximum squad size, so this page will not put a figure on it.

A community video claimed squads are effectively unlimited. That is worth knowing but it is an unverified community claim, not a published limit, and it has never been confirmed by BULKHEAD.

What is documented is the match structure around it: a match splits 100 players across three teams, so any squad sits inside a team that has its own capacity. If your friend’s team is full you will be playing against them rather than beside them, regardless of squad rules.

Until BULKHEAD publishes a figure, treat “unlimited squads” as unconfirmed. The practical constraint groups actually hit is team capacity, not squad capacity.

Squad questions answered

Short answers to the most common squad problems.

  • How do I make a squad in WARDOGS?Press Esc inside a match and choose Create Squad at the top of the menu.
  • Can I create a squad from the main menu? No. Squads are created inside a match. The main menu panel sends invites, but it does not create the squad itself.
  • How do I join a squad? The Esc menu lists the squads currently open in your match, and joining one is a single action.
  • How do I join a squad that is locked? You cannot from the outside. Someone inside has to select you from the Unassigned Players list and invite you across.
  • What is the max squad size in WARDOGS?No official number has been published. A community video claimed squads are effectively unlimited, but neither the store page nor any developer documentation confirms a figure.
  • Why does being in a squad matter?Squad chat is a private voice channel. Proximity chat can be overheard by nearby enemies, so it is not safe for coordination.
  • Why did my friend and I end up on different teams?Team slots fill up. Joining through the Steam friends list resolves server, team and squad in one step.
