WARDOGS runs exactly two voice channels: a squad channel that reaches your squad anywhere on the map, and a local proximity channel that reaches whoever is physically near you. Hold J for squad, hold K for proximity.
There is no channel between squads. No command channel, no squad-leader channel, no team-wide voice — so two squads on the same faction can only talk when their players are close enough for proximity voice to carry. That is the entire answer to talking across squads.

The two channels, and what each one reaches
The distinction that matters in play is range. Squad voice ignores distance entirely, which is what makes a squad useful as a coordination unit rather than just a spawn group. Proximity voice ignores team membership, which is what makes it dangerous.
Anything you say on proximity can be heard by enemies standing close enough, so it is not a safe channel for planning. Use it for the things that only matter to people who can already see you.
| Channel | Who hears it |
|---|---|
| Squad (hold J) | Your squad, anywhere on the map |
| Proximity (hold K) | Anyone nearby — including enemies |
| Cross-squad or command | Does not exist in the game |
Proximity voice is not filtered by team. Treat it as a channel enemies can listen to, because they can.
How to talk between squads anyway
Since the game provides no channel for it, coordinating two squads on the same faction has to happen outside the squad system. There are three practical routes and each has a real cost.
The cleanest in-game option is to have the squad leaders physically meet, because proximity voice then carries between them. That works for setting up a push and fails for anything needing continuous contact.
- Proximity meet-up — Move the leaders close together. Works in game, but enemies nearby hear it too.
- An external call — A Discord call alongside the game is what organised groups actually use for cross-squad comms.
- Merge into one squad — Possible, since no squad size limit is published — but one voice channel with twenty people in it stops being usable.
- Map pings — Not voice, but pings are shared within a squad and are often enough to coordinate timing without talking.
Turning voice chat on
Three separate toggles have to be on, and the master one gates the other two. Turning on only the squad toggle while the master is off produces silence with no error, which is why voice appears broken for people who have technically enabled it.
Press Esc, open AUDIO and scroll to the VOICE CHAT block. Enable VOICE CHAT first, then SQUAD VOICE CHAT and PROXIMITY VOICE CHAT beneath it.
- VOICE CHAT — The master toggle. Both channels are dead while this is off.
- SQUAD VOICE CHAT — Enables the squad channel on J.
- PROXIMITY VOICE CHAT — Enables the local channel on K.
- VOIP SQUAD VOLUME — How loud your squad is.
- VOIP PROXIMITY VOLUME — How loud nearby players are.

The launch bug that killed voice permanently
If your voice stopped working entirely at launch and never came back within a session, that was a known fault rather than your setup. The Pre-Load Changelog of 9 September 2026 records the fix: "Fixed voice cutting out permanently after a failed join. Stale channel rejoins, push to talk targeting and re-login all recover properly now."
The trigger is worth knowing because it connects to the other launch problems. A failed join — the same join timeout that produced error 1628505091 — left the voice channel stale, and nothing in the session recovered it afterwards.
The same changelog notes "Improved voice reliability under load, and added a visible communication status." If you are on a client from before that patch, update before troubleshooting anything on your own machine.
If voice still is not working
Check the master toggle before anything else. It is off by default for a large number of players and it silently disables both channels, which accounts for most reports of voice not working at all.
If you can hear others but they cannot hear you, the problem is push-to-talk rather than the channel. Both keys are hold-to-talk, so a tap produces nothing — and J and K are separate bindings, so working squad voice tells you nothing about proximity.
If voice worked and then stopped mid-session, rejoin rather than restarting settings. That is the failure mode the 9 September patch addressed, and a re-login recovers the channel.
Voice chat questions answered
Short answers to the most common comms problems.
- Can squads talk to each other in WARDOGS? — No. There is no cross-squad or command channel — only squad voice and proximity.
- What are the voice chat keys? — Hold J for squad voice and hold K for proximity voice.
- Is there team-wide voice chat? — No. The widest in-game channel is your squad.
- Can enemies hear my proximity voice? — Yes. Proximity is not filtered by team.
- How do I turn voice chat on? — Esc, then AUDIO, then enable VOICE CHAT plus the squad and proximity toggles beneath it.
- Why can nobody hear me? — The master VOICE CHAT toggle is probably off, or you are tapping rather than holding the key.
- My voice died and never came back — why? — A failed join left the channel stale. The 9 September patch fixed it; update and re-login.
